From promise to reality: Coco Gauff is the queen of the US Open 2023

Coco Gauff (N°6 del ranking WTA) made history in New York. After a real fight of just over two hours inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the American She beat Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and became the new Grand Slam champion at the US Open. It is the fourth local tennis player to achieve it in this century after Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens.

She arrived in the Big Apple as one of the candidates thanks to her previous performance on the North American tour on cement. Previous days, she had debuted as a champion at the 500 level in Washington and at the 1000 level in Cincinnati. But, beyond previous predictions, a Grand Slam is never an easy task.

A dream story for the tennis player who grew up with the image of the Williams sisters as undisputed references. From the age of 15 she joined the women’s circuit and, step by step, she gained ground until she was among the top ten in the world. Starting Monday, as the new Grand Slam champion, she will also celebrate her best position as the third racket on the planet behind Aryna Sabalenka (1st) and Iga Swiatek (2nd).

She is the fourth local tennis player to win the US Open this century, joining Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens. She is also the first American to win a Grand Slam in the singles category since Sofia Kenin at the 2020 Australian Open.
